Grove Court is a place in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City. It is the address of six townhouses built off Grove Street, at the section where the street makes a bend. The bend marked property division during the Colonial period.
The six townhouses were built by Samuel Cocks in the empty passage between Nos. 10 and 12, Grove Street, partly because he hope it would drive business to his shop at No. 18.
Although highly prized today, when it was built, residential courts were considered rather low class, so much so that the place earned the nickname "Mixed Ale Alley".
How to reach Grove Court
Take the 1 train to Christopher Street/Sheridan Square subway station. Walk west along Grove Street. After Bedford Street, it makes a bend. Grove Court is on the south side of the bend. You can see it through the small gate, with a sign saying "Private Court". The courtyard looks quite comfortable.Return to Greenwich Village
