Gulfport is the second largest city in Mississippi. It covers 64.2 sq mi (166.4 sq km) and has a population of 68,000 people (2011 estimate), within a metropolitan area which includes Biloxi and Pascagoula.

As its name suggests, Gulfport is on the Gulf of Mexico. The city was incorporated in 1898. It was created to provide an outlet for lumber being shipped from the hinterland of Mississippi. Since its humble beginnings, the city has diversified into other industries, including tourism. The city was however dealt a heavy blow by Hurricane Katrina, which caused much of Gulfport to be flooded or destroyed.
