Hagerstown is a city in Washington County, in northwestern Maryland. Covering 10.7 sq mi (27.6 sq km), it has a population of 40,000 people (2011 estimate), making it the 6th most populous city in Maryland.

Hagerstown experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cold winters. The warmest month is July, with average high temperature of 86.1°F (30.1°C). Coldest month is January, with average low temperature of 20.8°F (-6.2°C). May gets the most rain, at 4.14 in (105.2 mm).

Hagerstown was named after Jonathan Hager, a German immigrant to settled in the area in 1739. Initially the settlement was called Hager's Fancy. In 1762, Hager officially founded the town, calling it Elizabethtown after his wife. The city council however named it Hagerstown in 1813, as the name is the most popular for the area.

In the 19th century, a number of railroad companies built their railway lines thorugh Hagerstown, earning it the nickname of Hub City. The city also has an aircraft manufacturing plant which built the Ballanca CD by plane during the First World War and Fairchild Aircraft from 1931 until 1984. Today the Hagerstown Aviation Museum displays some of the aircrafts made there.

Interstate 70 and Interstate 81 are the two national highways passing through Hagerstown. You can reach it in less than two hours from Washington DC and Baltimore.
