Helmsley Building is a building in Lower Midtown, in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Built in 1929 for the New York Central Railroad Company, the Helmsley Building was designed by the architectural firm of Warren & Whetmore.

At the time of its completion, the 35-storey Helmsley Building towered over the Grand Central Terminal. That was until the MetLife Building was built, and it towered over everything else. It has a pyramid top capped with an ornate cupola.

The building got its present name after it was bought by the late billionaire Harry Helmsley. His wife Leona, often dubbed the Queen of Mean, had a reputation for firing staff over the smallest mistake. She however had to spend some time in prision for a tax evasion charge. The prison term softened the lady, who made contributions to help families of New York firefighters after the September 11, 2001 attack. She passed away on 20 August, 2007.

How to reach the Helmsley Building

The Helmsley Building is located at 230 Park Avenue. Take the 7 train to the Grand Central subway station. Walk north along Lexington Avenue until intersection with East 46th Street. Turn left, walk west along East 46th Street until you reach the Helmsley Building on your left.
