Hotel Chelsea is a beautiful, heritage-rich hotel in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The hotel prides itself for being at the center of the artistic and bohemian activity of the city. It is housed in a twelve-storey red-brick building facing West 23rd Street.

Hotel Chelsea was built in 1883. The following year, it opened its doors as a private apartment cooperative. At that time, it was the tallest building in New York City, a title it held until 1899. During the heydays, West 23rd Street was the enter of New York's Theater District. Unfortunately the neighborhood suffered a downturn. Theaters moved out, and within a few years, the cooperative was bankrupt.

In 1905, the building found new life as a hotel. It was a favorite of many artistes and pop singers. When people mentioned that they are staying at the Chelsea, they meant this hotel. Bob Dylan stayed here, as did Tennessee Williams and Mark Twain. Andy Warhol used the hotel for his movie Chelsea Girls.

On a darker note, write Dylan Thomas died of alcohol poisoning here, in 1953, while in 1978, Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistol may have stabbed his girlfriend Nancy Spungen here.

Other famous occupants of Hotel Chelsea included Thomas Wolfe, Janis Joplin, Arthur Miller, Jimi Hendrix and Arthur C. Clarke.
