More on Idaho Falls ID

The history of Idaho Falls goes back to 1865, when Matt Taylor built a bridge there for the Montana Trail, a wagon road for the gold rush towns. As a result of that bridge, the site was originally called Taylor's Crossing. However by the following year, it appears that the town was known as Eagle Rock, this time in reference to a basalt island in the Snake River.

Idaho Falls finally got its present name in 1891, when the townspeople voted for the name. The name is taken from the rapids located below Taylor's Bridge. Idaho Falls was the site of the National Reactor Testing Station, which opened in 1949 in the desert outside the city. In 1961, the station had a nuclear incident which caused the only nuclear fatality in the US, killing three workings in the reactor room.
