Ithaca is a city in upstate New York. Covering 6.1 sq mi (15.7 sq km), Ithaca is the county seat of Tompkins County. It was named after the Greek island of Ithaca. The city is on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake. It is best known as the home to Cornell University. Ithaca is also said to be the birthplace of ice cream sundae, said to have been invented here in 1891 by the Rev. John M. Scott and local pharmacist Chester Platt.

Ithaca has a population of slightly over 30,000 (2011 estimate). However it has a high fluctuation in population contributed by a large number of students at three big colleages in the vicinity. Cornell University alone has a student population of over 20,000, the majority of which are at the Ithaca campus. Ithaca College and Tompkins Cortland Community College also contribute substantial number to the overall student population in Ithaca's metropolitan area.
Ithaca was originally settled by the Saponi and Tutelo tribes of Native Americans, who were allowed to live on the hunting grounds of the Cayuga tribe. However the arrival of the Sullivan-Clinton Expedition in 1779 gradually uprooted the Native Americans from the area. The land was then redistributed among European settlers.
