More on Jamestown
Jamestown was founded in 1872 when the US Army built Fort Seward in the area. The fort was erected to protect the Northern Pacific Railroad which was built across the James River. After the fort was decommissioned, the town continued to grow. In the early days, it depended on the railway as a mainstay of its economy, as the railway repair yard was located there.
