The Juneau area was the traditional fishing grounds of the Tlingit Indians. Among the tribes here include the Auke and Taku. The settlement from which Juneau was formed was established by gold prospectors in 1880. The following year the miners renamed it after Joe Juneau, a faniys miner and prospector from Canada.
Juneau experiences a humid continental climate. The warmest month is July, when average temperature rises to between 49°F and 64°F. The lowest temperature of the year is in January, when it falls to between 21°F and 31°F. The wettest months are September and October, with precipitations of 7.5 in and 8.3 in respectively.
