Kailua is a town in Honolulu County, Hawaii. (It may also refer to a town of the same name in Hawaii County, on the Big Island). Kailua is located in Ko'olaupoko District, on the east coast of the island of Oahu. The town has a population of around 36,500 (2011 estimate).

The Kailua area is believed to have been inhabited for over 1,500 years. In the 16th century, it was the seat of kings of Oahu, the Alii Aimoku. In 1795, Kailua was conquered by King Kamehameha I.

Kailua today still has a small town feel to it. The area has some of the best beaches in Hawaii. The sea is ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Visiting Kailua
Kailua is connected to Honolulu by Interstate h2 (John A. Burns Freeway). Leave the Interstate highway at Exit 14 and continue on Mokapu Boulevard. Alternatively, take Interstate H1 until Exit 21, and continue north on Pali Highway (Route 61).
