The city of Louisville was founded in 1778 by Col. George Rogers Clark, who started a settlement on Corn Island. Two years later, the town charter was approved, and the town was named Louisville in honor of King Louis XVI of France, for his help in the American Revolutionary War.

Until the Civil War, Louisville was one of the largest slave-trading centers in the United States. Its location on the Ohio River made it a useful stop for fleeing slaves on the Underground Railroad.

Visitors to Louisville get to enjoy the lovely architecture of its downtown area and window-shop in the Highlands shopping district.
