The city of Loveland was founded in 1877. It was named after the president of the Colorado Central Railroad, William A.H. Loveland, in recognition for having the railway line built to the area. It began as a farming community where the farmers grew sour cherries and sugar beets. In the early 20th century, Loveland was one of the biggest cherry producers west of the Mississippi, but by the 1960's, cherries were no longer farmed there, as the earlier crops had been destroyed by droughts, freeze and blight.
By the late 20th century, the growth of Loveland and neighboring Fort Collins have almost merged the two cities, that a green lung was established to ensure the two are separated.
