The first two Madison Square Gardens were located at the Northeast corner of Madison Square, at Madison Ave. and 26th St, on the site now occupied by the New York Life Insurance Building. It was from this original garden that the arena got its name.

Subsequently a new 17,000-seat arena was built at 50th Street and 8th Avenue and opened on 15 December 15, 1925. The present incarnation of the Madison Square Garden is at 7th Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets, situated on top of Pennsylvania Station, and opened on 14 February, 1968.

The arena gaves its name to the Madison Square Garden Network, the cable television network that broadcasts most of the sporting events held in the Garden, as well as concerts and entertainment events that have taken place there. As the arena has moved to new locations the same name remains till this day, although since 1925 Madison Square Garden has been neither a garden nor on Madison Square.
