Madison Square is a public square in Manhattan, New York City. It was formed by the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway at 23rd Street. The square opened in 1847, and was named after the fourth President of the United States, James Madison.

Madison Square was where US President Theodore Roosevelt and writer Edith Wharton were born. In 1884, when the Statue of Liberty was under construction, its torch was exhibited here. But perhaps most famous of all, Madison Square lend its name to the Madison Square Garden, which incidentally is no longer located within the area.

Today Madison Square is a neighborhood with posh restaurants. Among the skyscrapers within its vicinity include the New York Life Insurance Company building, built in 1928 by Cass Gilbert, who also designed the Woolworth Building; the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, designed by James Brown Lord in 1900; and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Building, which was the tallest building in the world when it was completed in 1909.
