Madison, the capital of Wisconsin and county seat of Dane County, is a city in south central Wisconsin. It covers 84.7 sq mi (219.4 sq km) and has a population of 233,000 people (2012 estimate), making it the second largest city in the state behind Milwaukee.

Madison experiences a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. July is the hottest month, when average high temperature rises to 82.1°F (27.8°C), while January is the coldest month, with average low temperature of 9.3°F (-12.6°C). August receives the most rain, at 4.33 in (110 mm). Snow can be expected from December to March.Madison was founded by federal judge James Duane Doty in 1836. He had hoped that the city would be selected to be the site of the capital of Wisconsin. To booster its chances, Doty named it after James Madison, the 4th President of the United States, who passed away on 28 June of that year. He also named the streets of the city (then existing only on paper) after the 38 signers of the US constitution. Doty successfully lobbied for Madison to be made state capital, partly due to its location between Milwaukee in the east and the long established post of Prairie du Chien in the west.
