More on Maine

Maine covers an area of 35,385 sq mi (91,646 sq km). It has a population of about 1.3 million people. Maine is the only state in the United States with a one-syllable name, and is also the only state bordered by just one other US state.

The area of Maine was inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking tribes until the arrival in 1604 of the first European, French merchant and explorer Pierre Du Gua de Mont. A few years later (in 1607), the first English settlement was established in Maine, but lasted just for a short period. It was part of the state of Massachusetts until 1820, when it became an independent state, the 23rd in the Union, under the Missouri Compromise.

The capital of Maine is the town of Augusta while the largest city is Portland. Both are relatively small towns in a state that is also not highly populated.

Budget Travel to Maine

Most people go to Maine via Boston, where you can catch buses to go there. As you would need a car to properly explore the state, a good way, if you're not driving in, is to rent one at the airport in Boston. Interstate 95 is the main highway from Boston. It goes right through the state.

Budget Travel within Maine

As mentioned, a car is a necessity to explore Maine. Much of the areas north and west of Bangor are on private land, so you may need permits to access some of these places, passing through checkpoints.
