More on Manchester

Manchester is one of the towns created by the New Hampshire grant instituted by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth. Named after Robert Montagu, the 3rd Duke of Manchester, it was first settled in 1764. As the soil there is more suitable for grazing than tillage, it became a place for raising sheep.

Today Manchester is a tourist destination because it has a number of factory outlet stores for Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren. The Northshire Bookstore, a major independent bookstore, is also located here.

Visiting Manchester

Manchester is located off US Highway 7. From Bennington, you can reach it by taking Vermont State Route 7A heading north.
