Mankato is a city in the southern part of Minnesota. Covering 15.4 sq mi (39.9 sq km), it stretches across Blue Earth County, Nicollet County and Le Sueur County. The city has a population of 39,000 people (2011 estimate) and is the fourth largest city in Minnesota.

Mankato is located at the confluence of the Minnesota River with the Blue Earth River. It is the bigger of the two cities in the Mankato-North Mankato metropolitan area, which has a populaton of 94,000 people.

The warmest month in Mankato if July, when average high temperature rises to 83°F (28°C). Coldest month is January, when the average lows drop to 6°F (-14°C). August is the wettest month in Mankato, receiving 5.31 in (134.9 mm) of rainfall.

Until the arrival of European settlers, the area around Mankato was inhabited by various groups of Native Americans. One of the first Europeans to settle there was Parsons King Johnson in 1852. This led to more people coming in, and the city of Mankato was established in 1858. It is said that the city was intended to be named Mahkato, but a typographical error resulted in it being named Mankato.

There aren't any interstate highways in the vicinity of Mankato. If you are coming from Minneapolis or Saint Paul, take US Highway 169 heading south.

  1. Mankato Farmers' Market
    This is where the people come to buy farm produce as well as jams and other cottage products. It only runs from May through October.

  2. Minneopa State Park
    A beautiful place to relax and enjoy the scenery. Minneopa means "water falling twice" in the language of the Dakota Indians.
