The Marble Collegiate Church is the oldest continuous Protestant place of worship in North America. The church is located at 5th Avenue & West 29th Street. It was founded in 1628 as the Collegiate Reformed Protestant Dutch Church. It is affiliated to the Dutch Reformed Church.
The church building of the Marble Collegiate Church was built in 1854. It was built with marble blocks which gave the church its name. The "collegiate" part of the name comes from the way it is administered.
The most famous minister of the Marble Collegiate Church is Dr Norman Vincent Peale, who wrote The Power of Positive Thinking. He served as senior minister at the church from 1932 to 1984. Lucille Ball married her second husband Gary Morton there, while Richard Nixon attended services here when he was just a lawyer in New York City.
How to reach the Marble Collegiate Church
Take the R or W train to the 28th Street subway station. Walk east down E 28th Street until intersection with Fifth Avenue. Turn left and walk north up Fifth Avenue until you arrive at the Marble Collegiate Church to the left, at the corner of Fifth Avenue with West 29th Street.Return to New York City Attractions
