Maryland is a small state on the East Coast of the contiguous United States of America. It is located in the Mid Atlantic region. The state, which covers an area of only 12,407 sq mi (32,133 sq km) is bordered by Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia to the south and west, Pennsylvania to the north, and Delaware to the east.

The highest point in the state is Hoye Crest, on Backbone Mountain, which is 3,360 ft (1,020 m) above sea level. The eastern part of Maryland is covered with low-lying marshlands and sand dunes. The Chesapeake Bay watershed forms a major part of the state's waterways.
Most of the people in Maryland live in the cities close to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. The western part of the state is rural, with an Appalachian characteristic, while the Southern and Eastern Shore regions embody a Southern culture.

Budget Travel to Maryland
By Car
If you intend to explore the state extensively, I would recommend driving here, or renting a car at the airport. There are a number of Interstate highways linking Maryland to neighboring states. I-95 connects Philadelphia and Wilmington on the northeast to enter Maryland, passing Baltimore and onwards to Washington, D.C. I-81 cuts through the western part of Maryland from Pennsylvania to Virginia. I-83 goes south from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to reach Baltimore.

There are a few international airports which you can use to enter Maryland. They include the Baltimore-Washington International (BWI), which is the main airport of the state, as well as the Reagan International Airport (DCA) and Dulles International Airport, both located in neighboring northern Virginia.
