The land around Mesa was traditionally the homeland of the Hohokam tribe of Native Americans. They are noted for having built a canal system that is regarde as the largest and most sophisticated in the New World. The Hohokam people had long disappeared before the first white settler moved in.
Mesa City was established on 17 July, 1878. It started as a 1-square-mile town. When Mesa City was incorporated in 1883, it had a population of 300 people. Until as late as the 1960's, agriculture was the main occupation of the people of Mesa. This eventually was replaced as Mesa became urbanized by the grown of the metropolitan area of Phoenix.
