Midtown Manhattan covers 5 sq mi (12 sq km) and is characterized by its dense concentration of skyscrapers. Within Midtown Manhattan itself, the closer one gets to 59th Street, the more expensive the real estate becomes. The section between 42nd Street and 59th Street is often called Plaza District. This is the most expensive part of Midtown.

Midtown Manhattan is the largest central business district in New York, and by extension, in the United States. You can find within this section of New York City its tallest hotels and tallest skyscrapers, including the tallest among them, the Empire State Building. Also within Midtown Manhattan are mammoth multi-purpose complexes such as Rockerfeller Center and major shopping destinations such as Times Square and Fifth Avenue.
