Minot is the county seat of Ward County in north central North Dakota. It covers 14.6 sq mi (37.7 sq km) and has a population of 41,000 people (2011 estimate), making it the fourth largest city in North Dakota.

Minot is located in the Drift Prairie. It experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm while winters are very cold. Warmest month is July, with average high temperatures of 81.2°F (27.3°C). Coldest month is January, when the average low temperature drops to 3.2°F (-16°C). June is the wettest month, receiving 3.15 in (80 mm) of rain.

Minot was established in 1886. It came about when construction of the Great Northern Railway had to stop for the winter. A tent city sprung up, as if by magic, leading the Minot being nicknamed the Magic City. The city occupied land belonging to homesteader Erik Ramstad, who was persuaded to relinquish claim over the land. He became one of the city leaders.

Minot was incorporated on 28 June, 1887. It was named in honor of railroad investor Henry D Minot.

US Highways 83 and 52 are the two main routes through Minot. Route 83 connects it to Bismarck in the south.
