Misty Fjord National Monument, Alaska

Misty Fjords National Monument is a nature site and Wilderness Area on the extreme southeastern tip of Alaska. Located in the Alaska Panhandle, the national monument covers 2,292,343 acres (9,246 sq km) of Tongass National Forest. It was established by President Jimmy Carter on 1 December, 1978.
The Wilderness Area covers all but 151,832 acres (614 sq km) of the national monument. Within the non-Wilderness part of the national forest is Quartz Hill, which has possibly the largest deposit of molybdenum in the world.

Misty Fjords National Monument is often nicknamed "The Yosemite of the North" due to similarities in their geology. The landscape here is composed mainly of light-colored granite between 50 to 70 million years old. The park has several glacier valleys called "canals". These are filled with seawater, with the valley walls rising almost vertically to a height of 2,000 to 3,000 feet from the surface, and plunging to a depth of 1,000 feet.
The vegetation in the area comprises Western Hemlock, Sitka Spruce and Western Redcedar. The fauna include Grizzly and Black Bears, deer and mountain goats. Within the fjords are salmon and whales.
