The city of Nampa had its beginnings in the early 1880's, spurred by the construction of the Oregon Short Line Railroad that passed through it. The railroad is so much a part of the city that its roads were constructed to be perpendicular to the railway tracks. This was deliberate on the part of Nampa founder Alexander Duffes, to prevent mishaps involving people crossing the railway tracks.
