Naperville is the fifth largest city in Illinois by population. It covers 35.5 sq mi (92 sq km) and has a population of 142,000 (2011 estimate). The city of Naperville has a history going back to 1831, when Joseph Naver arrived at the west bank of the DuPage River and founded Naper's Settlement. The initial group of settlers were joined by over a hundred more the following year. Naper's Settlement was incorporated as the Village of Naperville in 1857, and reincorporated as a city in 1890.
