More on New London CT

The New London was first settled by the English in 1646. Until then, the area was inhabited by Pequot Indians. There were a few names being proposed for the new settlement, among them Pequot and Faire Harbour, before the town settled on New London.

New London has the best deep harbor on Long Island Sound. For that reason, it served as the base for the settlers during the American Revolutionary War. The port has always been tied to the history and prosperity of the town. In the 19th century, it was the second busiest whaling port in the world after New Bedford in Massachusetts.
