New Victory Theatre is an off-Broadway theater in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It is located at 209 West 42nd Street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.
New Victory is a classic Broadway theater. It was built at the behest of Oscar Hammerstain I, and designed in 1899. It opened as the Republic Theatre in 1900. Two years later it was leased by David Belasco, who renamed it Belasco Theater (but a different venue from the Belasco Theatre that we know today).

In 1910, David Belasco renamed his Stuyvesant Theatre after himself, and so Republic Theater returned to its original name. In 1931 it was turned into a burlesque house, and remained so until 1941. In 1942 it became a movie house named Victory. By the 1970's, as the neighborhood became seedy, it was one of the cinemas showing adult movies.
New York City, together with the State of New York, too over Victory cinema in 1990 and turned it over to The New 42nd Street, Inc., a not-for-profit establishment set up to redevelop historic theaters. It reopened in 1995 under the present name, The New Victory Theatre, and became New York's first theater for children and families, with programs that include circus arts, puppetry and dance.
New Victory Theatre was one of 406 arts and social service institutions in New York City to benefit from the $20 million grant from the Carnegie Corporation which came about through a donation from New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.
How to reach New Victory Theatre
Take the 1, 2 or 3 train to the Times Square / 42nd Street Station. Walk west along West 42nd Street and you will arrive at New Victory Theatre on your right.Return to New York City Attractions
