Newark was founded in 1666 by the Puritans from Connecticut. It experienced rapid growth particularly in the 19th and early 20th century. By the end part of the 20th century, the city center has become crime-ridden, once earning the dubious title of Most Dangerous City in the Nation from Time Magazine in 1996. However, since then crime and murder rates have dropped significantly.

The economy of Newark is based on transportation and financial services. Port Newark, which is part of the Port of New York and New Jersey, has a major cargo facility. The city is also home to a number of insurance companies including Prudential Financial and Mutual Benefit Life.
