Norfolk is located at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. It is one of the nine cities and seven counties that form the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The city experiences a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and mild winters. July is the hottest month with average high temperature of 86.8°F (30.4°C). It also gets the most rain, at 5.17 in (131.3 mm). January is the coldest month, when average low temperature drops to 32.3°F (0.2°C).The history of Norfolk goes back to 1619, when the Governor of the Virginia Colony formed four incorporations (or cities), one of which, Elizabeth Cittie, later became Elizabeth City Shire, and from it, came New Norfolk County. New Norfolk County was split into Upper Norfolk County and Lower Norfolk County, which became present-day Norfolk. It was of course named after the ceremonial county of Norfolk, England.
Today Norfolk has homes in a variety of styles. The earliest houses were laid out in the Georgian style. After the Revolutionary War, many of the houses were rebuilt in the Federal style. In the early 19th century, the Neo-Classical style became popular. Then came the Gothic Revival style from the 1830s. In the early 20th century, the Art Deco style became fashionable.
