North Cascades National Park is a national park on the northern part of Washington. state. Located on the US-Canada border, it adjoins the British Columbia parkland in Canada.

North Cascades National Park covers 684,000 acres (1,069 sq mi). It was established on 2 October, 1968. The park is noted for its rugged terrain, panoramic mountain landscapes and its many glaciers.

When North Cascades National Park was established, it had some 318 glaciers covering 117 sq km. Since then, due to global warming, many of these glaciers have retreated and are continuing to retreat alarmingly. The biggest glacier in North Cascades is Boston Glacier. Other major glaciers in the park include Redoubt Glacier, Nooksack Glacier, Sulphide Glacier, Challenger Glacier, Inspiration Glacier, McAllister Glacier and Neve Glacier.

The wildlife of North Cascades National Park include a few rare and endangered species, such as the grizzly bear, moose, lynx and wolverine. Despite its scabrous terrain and often inhospital climate, the mountainous park harbor an ecosystem with over a thousand vascular plants having been identified. It also has some 236,000 acres of old-growth forests.

Visiting North Cascades National Park, Washington

From Seattle, head north on Interstate 5. Take Exit 230 and follow head east on State Highway 20. You need to navigate through the city of Burlington (view map) to continue on State Highway 20, also known as the North Cascades Highway.

North Cascades National Park is open all year round. Located in Newhalem, the visitor center may close in winter if the weather is bad. Also, it is usually closed from late October until late May. Entrance fees to the national park is $12 per car with occupants. Camp sites are available for $12 per night.
