North Dakota is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States of America. It is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Winnipeg to the north, Minnesota to the east, South Dakota to the south, and Montana to the west.

North Dakota covers an area of 70,700 sq mi (183,272 sq km), making it the 19th largest state out of the 50 in the country. It measures 210 miles (340 km) from east to west and 340 miles (545 km) from north to south. The highest point in the state is White Butte, which stands at a height of 3,506 ft (1,069 m).

North Dakota has a population of 647,000 (2010 est.). It is the third least populated state, and ranks 48th out of the 50 states. The biggest city is Fargo while the capital is Bismarck. North Dakota was known as Dakota Territory until it achived statehood on 2 November, 1889, making it the 39th state to join the Union.

North Dakota has two time zones. Much of the state is in the Central time zone, which is -6/-5 behind GMT while the southwest part of the state is in the Mountain zone, at -7/-6 behind GMT. The abbreviation for the state is ND.

By Road
Interstate 94 is a highway that cuts across North Dakota, linking Bismarck with Fargo. I-29 is another highway. It runs from the Canadian border and passes through Fargo before exiting the state in the south.
