North Platte is the county seat of Lincoln County in southwestern Nebraska. It covers 10.6 sq mi (27.4 sq km) and has a population of close to 25,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is located at the confluence of the North Platte River and South Platte River, which together form the Platte River.

The history of North Platte goes back to 1868, when the Union Pacific Railroad reached the area. The name North Platte was determined by the flip of a coin - the choice being North or South Platte.

The city of North Platte was where Colonel William F. Cody in 1882 organized an Independence Day celebration called Old Glory Blowout. Gaining fame as Buffalo Bill Cody, he developed his cowboy show into the Wild West Show and toured the world with it.
