Oregon is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It covers an area of 98,381 sq mi (255,025 sq km), making it the 9th biggest of the 50 states. Oregon measures 360 miles (580 km) from east to west and 260 miles (420 km) from north to south. Its highest point is Mount Hood, at 11,249 ft (3,425 m).

Oregon faces the Pacific Ocean to the west, and is bordered by Washington to the north, Idaho to the east, Nevada to the southeast and California to the south.

Oregon has a population of 3.8 million people (2010 estimate), making it the 27th most populous state. Its biggest city is Portland while its capital is Salem. It was known as Oregon Territory until receiving statehood on 14 February, 1859, becoming the 33rd state in the Union. Much of the state is within the Pacific time zone (-8/-7 GMT) except for most of Malheur County, which is in the Mountain time zone (-7/-6 GMT). The abbreviation for Oregon is OR.

By Plane
Visitors to Oregon may arrive at the Portland International Airport (PDX) in Portland, Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport (MFR) in Medford and the Mahlon Sweet Field Airport (EUG) in Eugene.

By Train
The Coast Starlight train from Amtrak runs from Los Angeles, California, to Seattle, Washington, passing through the Oregon, and stopping at Portland, Salem, Eugene and Klamath Falls. It is regarded as one of the most scenic rides in America.

By Road
You can take Interstate Highway 5 between Washington and California, or Interstate 84 (west), which enters Oregon from Boise, Idaho, and follows the Columbia River which forms the border between Oregon and Washington.
