More on Pawtucket

The area around Pawtucket was first settled in 1671. There were two settlements, one on the west side of the Blackstone River, called North Providence, and another on the east, part of Massachusetts, called Rehoboth. These two settlements merged to form present-day Pawtucket in 1886, when the boundary was redrawn, transferring the former Massachusetts land to Rhode Island.

Pawtucket experienced rapid industrialization in the late 19th century. It was a major center for the manufacture of cotton textile until the Great Depression, which closed down the textile-manufacturing facilities. Today the city has diversified its economy to other industries ranging fro metals to jewelry. It is also the headquarters of Hasbro, one of the biggest toy manufacturers in the world.
