The original village was named Marshall, after a local store owner. It was renamed Pendleton in 1865, in honor of George H Pendleton, the Democratic candidate for Vice President in the 1864 presidential campaign.
As with many American towns in the 19th century, Pendletown started off as a trading post and lumber mill. It is the site of a prison, the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution, where the Prison Blue denim fabric was manufactured.
