More on Pensacola FL

The area of present-day Pensacola was inhabited by the Muskogen-speaking Native Americans. The name Pensacola is believed to have come from the Native Americans, and has been in use since 1677.

Pensacola is one of the few sites in the United States to have been ruled or settled by five different powers, leading it to be known as the City of Five Flags. The Spanish were the first to arrive there, when Tristán de Luna y Arellano landed in the area in 1559, resulting in it being made a Spanish colony.

In the late 17th century, French exploration of the lower Mississippi River raised concern among the Spanish, who built fortified towns in response. Pensacola became the capital of the British colony of West Florida when the Spanish ceded it to the British in 1763. It returned to Spain in 1781, and was sold to the United States in 1819.
