The city of Peoria is located in the Salt River Valley, on a gently sloping desert terrain right up to the foot of the northern mountains. The settlement in this area began aorund 1868 when John W. "Jack" Swilling led a team to dig an irrigation ditch. This made the area suitable for settlement. The city was named after Peoria, Illinois. Today it has outgrown its namesake.
