Peoria is a town straddling Maricopa County and Yavapai County in Arizona. Covering 141.7 sq mi (366.9 sq km) and with a population of 172,000, Peoria is the sixth biggest city in Arizona in terms of area, and the ninth most populous. It is located to the west of Phoenix.

The city of Peoria is located in the Salt River Valley, on a gently sloping desert terrain right up to the foot of the northern mountains. The settlement in this area began aorund 1868 when John W. "Jack" Swilling led a team to dig an irrigation ditch. This made the area suitable for settlement. The city was named after Peoria, Illinois. Today it has outgrown its namesake.
