More on Phoenix AZ

The city of Phoenix was founded in 1868 near the confluence of the Salt River and Gila River and incorporated in 1881. It grew to become a center for industries, culture and economy for Southwestern United States.

The location of Phoenix at the northeastern reaches of the Sonoran Desert means that it has one of the highest average temperature for a major city in the United States. For up to three months in a year the average temperature in Phoenix can rise to above 100°F (37.8°C), with the occasional spike of 120°F (48.9°C).

Budget Travel to Phoenix

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is the main air gateway to Phoenix and Arizona. The airport, the primary hub for US Airways, is just 3 miles (5 km) from downtown Phoenix. It comprises three terminals, namely Terminal 2, 3 and 4. The old Terminal 1 was demolished in 1990. There is no plan to renumber the terminals as the locals are already familiar with the existing numbers.

Budget travelers can reach downtown Phoenix by taking the Phoenix Transit Bus Red Line and Bus No. 13. Alternatively you can also take a free PHX Airport Shuttle to the 44th Street and Washington METRO Light Rail station.

Budget Travel within Phoenix

Phoenix is not a city that you can easily walk around. If the urban sprawl doesn't get you, the high summer temperature will. It is a good idea to rent a car if you don't already have one. If you are relying on public transport, there is an extensive bus system and a light rail line. The METRO Light Rail runs from north-central Phoenix, past the airport and onwards to Tempe and Mesa.

A number of Fortune 500 companies have taken out office space in Phoenix and the city has recently welcomed high tech companies alongside the long standing government, educational and tourism businesses.
