The area around Portland has been inhabited by Native Americans before the arrival of the first European, which was English naval captain Christopher Levett, in 1623. The earliest permanent settlement here was founded in 1633. It was called Casco, and was renamed Falmouth in 1658. It was renamed again to Portland in 1786, and made the capital of Maine in 1820. It served as capital until 1832, when the state capital was moved to Augusta.
Today Portland, Maine, is a modern harborside city with a well-preserved historic core. The city experiences a humid continental climate. July is the warmest month here, when temperatures regularly reaches 78.8°F (26°C). January is the coldest month, with average lows of 12.5°F (-10.83°C).

Interstate 95 is the only major highway linking Portland with the rest of the country. It is linked by Interstate 295 which passes through the city center. You can also fly to Portland International Airport (PWM), which receives non-stop flights from a good number of cities in the United States. There are taxis and shuttle buses from the airport to downtown Portland, a mere five miles away.
