Princeton is a college town in Mercer County, New Jersey. It comprises Princeton Township and the Borough of Princeton. Princeton Township was incorporated in 1838. It covers 16.62 sq mi (43 sq km) and has a population of 16,000 people (2011 estimate). The Borough of Princeton, formed in 1894. Totally surrounded by Princetown Township, it covers 1.9 sq mi (4.8 sq km) and has a population of 12,000 people. Princeton is the site of the official residence of the Governor of New Jersey since 1945.

The Princeton area was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape tribe of Native Americans. Europeans began establishing settlements in the area in the latter part of the 17th century. The town was originally part of an earlier settlement, Stony Brook, and was called Prince Town.Princeton University, one of the best research universities in the United States, was founded in 1747 as the College of New Jersey, and moved to Princeton in 1756, where it was renamed Princeton University. In 1776, Princetown hosted the first Legislature under the State Constitution of New Jersey.
Today Princeton is known throughout the United States for its university. Its population also tends to fluctuate according to the school term, rising in fall and winter and dropping over the course of summer.
