More on Providence RI
Providence was founded by Roger Williams, who with his followers broke company from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, in order to establish a church that is free from traces of corruption, which he deemed the Church of England to be. Arriving at the head of Narragansett Bay, he found the area suitable for a new settlement, and named it in honor of "God's merciful Providence".

Its city center is quite compact, and is really created for pedestrians rather than automobiles - for indeed cars have not been invented when Roger Williams established it.
