More on Providence RI

Providence was founded by Roger Williams, who with his followers broke company from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, in order to establish a church that is free from traces of corruption, which he deemed the Church of England to be. Arriving at the head of Narragansett Bay, he found the area suitable for a new settlement, and named it in honor of "God's merciful Providence".

The city of Providence covers 20.5 sq mi (53.2 sq km). Unlike newer cities of America, the layout of Providence does not follow any particular grid system, and to visitors may appear confusing, even chaotic. Its city center is quite compact, and is really created for pedestrians rather than automobiles - for indeed cars have not been invented when Roger Williams established it.

Providence experiences a humid continental climate. January is the coldest month, when temperature may dip to 28.7°F (-1.8°C) while July is the warmest, achieving temperatures of 73.3°F (22.9°C).
