Rochester is the third largest city in Minnesota and the largest outside the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. It is located in the southeastern corner of the state. Covering 39.8 sq mi (103 sq km), Rochester has a population of 107,000 people (2011 estimate).

Rochester experiences a humid continental climate. Summers here are warm to hot while winters can get very cold. Highest temperature of the year occurs in July, which gets an average high temperature of 82°F (28°C). The coldest time of the year is January, when average low temperatures drop to as low as 3°F (-16°C). Rochester gets the most rain in July, at 4.2 in (106.7 mm).

The history of Rochester goes back to the mid 19th century with the creation of Olmstead County in 1855. Two years later the newly established town of Rochester was designated as county seat. In those early days it served as a stagecoach stop on the route between Minneapolis/Saint Paul and Dubuque, Iowa.

Rochester is perhaps best known for Mayo Clinic, regarded as one of the best medical facility in the world. It was founded by Dr William Worrall Mayo, who began his career in Rochester as the examining surgeon for those drafted to the Civil War, but went on to found a hospital to take care of the wounded and injured. Since then, Mayo Clinic has offered treatment to many celebrated patients include presidents and kings.

Visiting Rochester

The Rochester International Airport (RST) is served by Delta Air Lines and American Airlines with direct flights from Minneapolis/St Paul, Detroit and Chicago.

If coming by road, take Interstate 90 until Exit 218, and continue on US Highway 52 towards Rochester.
