Initially founded as a farming town, Sacramento got a boost when co-founder James W Marshall discovered gold, sparking a gold rush to the area. The city of Sacramento was incorporated in 1850, making it the oldest city in the state to be incorporated.

In 1854, Sacramento was made the capital of California when the state legislature was relocated from Monterey. The California State Capitol in Sacramento was built between 1860 and 1874 in the Classical Revival style.
