Saint Paul has a population of 290,000 (2011 estimate), within the St Paul-Minneapolis metropolitan area which has a population of 3.5 million people. About 10% of its population are Hmong immigrants who resettled there as refugees from Southeast Asia. Due to their close association, Saint Paul and Minneapolis are often called the Twin Cities.

The area around Saint Paul has been inhabited by Native Americans, namely the Sioux tribe, since the early 17th century. A fort was established here by Zebulon Pike, a US Army officer, in 1803. The area around the fort was frequented by fur traders a and missionaries, and was called Pig's Eye Landing after a popular tavern located there.
The town of Saint Paul, the favorite saint of Father Lucien Galthier, a French-Canadian Catholic missionary who established a chapel there in 1841. When Minnesota Territory was formalized in 1849, it was chosen to be the capital.

As with Minneapolis, Saint Pault is connected to the rest of the country by Interstate 35 and 94. The I-35 runs north-south, connecting Minneapolis-St Paul with Duluth to the north and Des Moines to the south. The I-9 runs northwest-southeast, connecting it with Fargo to the northwest and Eau Claire to the southeast.
The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) is the main airport serving Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Arriving at this airport, you can take the Hiawatha Light Rail to downtown Minneapolis. Delta Air Lines has a hub in this airport, providing flights to major cities in the country as well as Tokyo, London, Amsterdam and Paris.
