More on Salt Lake City UT
Salt Lake City was founded by Brigham Young, a leader of the Latter Day Saints movement - also known as Mormon, who arrived in the area with his followers, the Mormon pioneers, in 1847. There, the Mormon settlers began to work the land.
The Mormon pioneers were regularly harassed by the US government for their practice of polygamy, something which they officially discontinued in 1890, so as to gain statehood. Although Salt Lake City is the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, less than half the people of the city today belong to the church.
