San Juan is the capital and biggest city in Puerto Rico. It is located on the northeastern coast of the island. The municipality of San Juan covers 77 sq mi (199.2 sq km) and has a population of about 400,000 (2011 estimate).

San Juan is older than any city on the American mainland. Established by the Spanish in 1521, it is the second oldest European-established city in the Americas after Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

Due to its long history, San Juan has many historical buildings including La Fortaleza, which is the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas. Its defensive fortresses, among them Fort San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Cristóbal, are noted places of interest.

San Juan experiences a tropical monsoon climate. Average temperature fluctuates between 79.9°F (26.6°C) and 90°F (32°C). The months of January to March are the driest while for the rest of the year rainfall is quite evenly distributed.
