More on Sedalia

Settlement in the area that became Sedalia was first established by General George Rappeen Smith who also founded nearby Smithton. According to official records, he named the area Sedville in 1857. This was at the eve of the American Civil War, and during the war years, it hosted a military installation, which contributed to its growth.

In the post-war decades, Sedalia carved a dubious reputation for itself on vice activities, particularly prostitution, leading the St Louis Post-Dispatch to call it the Sodom and Gomorrah of the 19th century. This was due to the high number of male laborers brought in for the rail and cattle industries. Towards the 20th century, its population of married couples grew, and the vice activities receded.

Today Sedalia is known as the location of the Missouri State Fair and the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival.

Sedalia is served by US Highway 65, which connects with Interstate 70 to the north. If you're coming from Kansas City, take I-70 until Marshall Junction (Exit 78) then head south on US Highway 65 until you reach Sedalia.
