Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Shenandoah National Park is a national park in Virginia. The park is long and narrow. It covers part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with the Shenandoah River and valley to the west, and the Virginia Piedmont hills to the east.
Shenandoah National Park was established on 26 December, 1935. It covers 199,017 acres (805 sq km). 79,579 acres (322 sq km) of the park is designated a wilderness area. The highest peak within the park is Hawksbill Mountain, standing at 4,051 feet (1,235 m).
Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park

Running the length of Shenandoah National Park is Skyline Drive, a 105-mile (169-km) country road that passes through several scenic viewpoints along the way. The road is particularly popular during the fall, when the leaves are turning color. Some two million visitors make a trip down Skyline Drive every year, and it is designated a National Scenic Byway.

From the north, you enter Skyline Drive at Front Royal (see Street View). From the south, take Interstate 64 to Exit 99 (Afton/Wayhesboro) and enter Skyline Drive from there.Shenandoah National Park is open all year round. Severe weather may force the closure of Skyline Drive, however. To get the latest update, call the park's recorded information line: (540) 999 3500,1,1. Entrance fee is $10 December to February, and $15 March to November, per private car, inclusive driver and passengers. Hikers on foot aged 16 and above pay $5 per person. Fees are valid for 7 consecutive days.
