More on Silver City

The area now occupied by Silver City was inhabited by the Apache Indians until the arrival of the Spaniards who established a settlement there called San Vicente de la Ciénega. American prospectors started settling in the area in the 1860s, and Silver City was established in 1870, shortly after silver ore was discovered in the area, and incorporated as a town in 1878.

In its early days, Silver City was the epitome of a Wild West town and held a reputation for lawlessness. One of the most notorious gunmen in Silver City was William H. Bonney, born William Henry McCarty Jr, but better known as Billy the Kid. Local county sheriff Harvey Whitehall was the first lawman to arrest Billy the Kid.
